The mothers in our Elsabet Initiative face challenges most of us can’t imagine. They live in poverty, struggle with malnutrition, and have limited access to medical care during pregnancy and childbirth. Yet they show up every single day with courage and love that mirrors the mothers we celebrate in our own lives.
In many communities in Ethiopia’s Sidama region, pregnancy is dangerous. Without proper medical care, nutrition support, or prenatal monitoring, both mother and baby are at risk. Complications that would be routine to treat in the US can become life-threatening. Malnutrition weakens mothers’ bodies. Limited access to healthcare means infections go untreated and warning signs go unnoticed.
This is where the Elsabet Initiative steps in.
What the Elsabet Initiative Does
Since 2016, we’ve supported over 875 vulnerable mothers through the Elsabet Initiative. We provide:
- Medical care during pregnancy and delivery – Partnering with local clinics to ensure mothers receive prenatal care and safe delivery support
- Nutrition support – Providing food and nutritional resources to combat malnutrition during pregnancy
- Livestock and economic support – Giving mothers cattle so they can build family stability and reduce poverty
- Training and mentorship – Equipping mothers with knowledge about healthy pregnancies and newborn care
