CLEAN WATER PROJECTS

WATER IS LIFE

ETHIOPIA AT A GLANCE

89 million people in Ethiopia don’t have access to clean drinking water.

  • Probability of children dying under 5 is 46.22 per 1000 births, largely due to unsafe water and disease. This is 8 times higher than the U.S.
  • Approximately 60-80% of communicable diseases can be traced to lack of access to clean water for drinking and hygiene
  • Lack of clean water is contributing to outbreaks of malaria, cholera, and measles

The existing water supply problem critically affects women and children who are typically responsible at the household level for collecting water. Clean water reduces the burden of women and children by reducing time and energy spent in collecting water.

Not only will we provide clean water but will also contribute to poverty reduction and gender equality among the beneficiary populations.

Clean Water. We take it for granted. Think about your last 24 hours. How many times did you use water? Do you remember each time?

You wake up. Use the bathroom and flush the toilet. You wash your face. Wash your hands. Brush your teeth. Get a drink of water. Make some coffee. Cook some breakfast. Wash dishes. More family gets up. Repeat. Wash some clothes. Wipe down some counters. Cook some more food. Give the kids more drink. Give them all a bath. And that last sip of water before they go to bed.

The testimonies we receive from community members at places we have been able to provide clean water tell us how important it is. Their children are in school more because they aren’t sick. They aren’t spending money on doctor visits and medicine. The community is more peaceful because they aren’t fighting over a small trickle of water. Babies aren’t dying.

Most of our projects are spring water projects which are different from wells. The water is already there and flowing. The water authority and engineers put together a very detailed plan with cost breakdown that consists of digging back to the original water source where it is pure and clean. It will then be piped out to a spot where spigots and fountains will be accessible and placed within a fenced area to protect it from animals and the damage they could cause.

In all of our projects, the community is very involved with the project—helping by digging roads out, by hand, to make way for the equipment needed to prepare the site and hauling in stone and concrete. They are willing to invest hard work themselves as they know how life changing it will be.

We are now beginning construction for our 22nd clean water project!

Bona Zuria Clean Water Project will give clean water to more than 1200 people! Below is a picture of the community’s current contaminated water site.

We would love for you to partner with us to change the life of a whole community by giving clean water.
